Devotion 11/30, Courage and Integrity
In talking about others having the right to be supported in their ministry, the apostle Paul says of himself, “But I have not used any of these rights. And I am not writing this in the hope that you will do such things for me. I would rather die than have anyone deprive me of this boast of being self-supporting.”
1 Corinthians 9:15
Paul explains that he gives up his rights as an apostle to preach the gospel without charge so that he can serve the Corinthians without compensation. Paul’s reasoning is that he doesn’t want to be tempted to abuse his authority as a teacher of the gospel. He also believes that this mindset will lead to greater obedience and reward.
Paul’s message is that Christians should be willing to give up their rights for the good of others, and that they should pursue godliness with a similar level of commitment. Paul’s actions in 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 illustrate how he goes to great lengths to reach out to people for the sake of the gospel.
Father God and Almighty Lord, please give me the courage and integrity to live my principles in a way that is a blessing and an example to others. Bless me, dear Father, with a life that makes a mark on others for your glory. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
