Devotion 10/1, Persevere
We also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.
Romans 5:3-4
Everyone of us will go through some form of suffering, whether a person is saved or unsaved, every human being will have some pain and discomfort in this life. As believers in Christ, however, what Paul is telling us here is to view our sufferings through our spiritual being instead of our human nature. When we look at trials and tribulations through our “child of God” eyes, we know that God will give us the peace and strength through His Holy Spirit to persevere in the midst of them and come out the other side having grown spiritually for it. So, while we do not like the present discomfort of sufferings, we know that the eventual results will be worth it. We could never develop perseverance if our lives were trouble free.
The perseverance that we gain through our problems, brings about character in us. When God sees us bearing up under our trials in life, keeping our eyes fixed on Him and trusting in Him to work all things out for His purposes (Romans 8:28), then He knows that we are growing spiritually and He is very pleased. To know that He is pleased fills us with hope and encourages us to go on for Him!
I can’t imagine my life without my Lord, the God of Hope. To persevere through trials with my focus on Him gives me hope. And once I’ve made it through, I can give Rejoice and give thanks to Him for my hope for tomorrow. Everything we suffer has meaning. Seek our Lord for it’s meaning
God never gives up. We have confidence in Him that having begun a good work in us, He will see it through to completion (Philippians 1:6).
Lord, I confess that I get impatient and frustrated with difficulty, pain, and suffering. Please give me more compassion and better listening to hear, so that I may bless those who need your love and grace. Give me the strength to find joy in the difficulties of breaking through the barriers Satan places in the way to distract us and keep us from the Jesus. In the Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
We all suffer trials, adults and children. Learning how to cope is a gift from God. To learn from those trials is for us to share with friends, family and our children. This song is a beautiful prayer to our God of Hope. Praise Him and give Him thanks today for our many blessings and our hope for all our tomorrows.
