Devotion 11/2, The Word
In the beginning there was the Word. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1
The first verse of John he establishes several important facts, and introduces an important term. Jesus is referred to as “The Word,” from the Greek word logos. Christ is the Logos, the definition, the meaning, the “Word” of God. This is the first of John’s seven names for Jesus: “The Word.” The rest of the gospel is John’s attempt to prove this through various forms of evidence, in particular Jesus’ miracles. The first eighteen verses of John counter many false beliefs about God. John establishes that the universe had a beginning, contrary to the idea that it is eternal. It also states that God has existed (at least) from that beginning. Later verses will show that God, in fact, created all that exists. This verse also makes it very clear that this Logos, Jesus, is identical to the Creator: the Word was God.
In my Marcia’s devotional “Grace for the Moment”, The Inspiational Study Bible, there is a page called “A Treasure Map”. It’s context is John 1:1. It really hit home after reading this scripture so I’d like to share it with you:
“The Bible has been banned, burned, scoffed, and ridiculed. Scholars have mocked it as foolish, Kings have banned it as illegal. A thousand times over it, the grave has been dug, and the dirge has begun, but somehow the Bible never stays in the grave. Not only has it survived, it has thrived. It is the single most popular book in all of history. It has been the best-selling in the world for years.
There is no way on earth to explain it. The answer? The Bible’s durability is not found on earth; it is found in heaven. For the millions who have tested it’s claims and claimed it’s promises there is but one answer–the Bibles is God’s book and God’s voice……
The purpose of the Bible is to proclaim God’s plan and passion to save his children. That is the reason this book has endured through the centuries….It is the treasure map that leads us to God’s highest treasure, eternal life.”
What gifts God continues to share and put at our fingertips: His only son, grace, love, mercy, His Words, His road map for eternal life! There are no short cuts on the map, just one road, Jesus–The Way!
Lord, I give thanks for your eternal love and grace. Thank you for all my many blessings I ask that the Holy Spirit guide me on this journey. Keep my eyes focused on Christ, the Way. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
What a powerful song! Jesus is “The Way”. The Bible is the road map.
Lord I pray that I glorify and praise you every step in my journey of faith. For you are my Rock, my Salvation, my Redeemer. Thank you for all the blessings you continue to shower down on me each and everyday. I pray I speak Jesus in all I say and do. In Christ’s name I pray, Amen
