Devotion 1/13, Faith should foster service
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.
Galatians 5:6
We do good works as a result of our salvation, not to gain salvation!
It is always good to step back and look at our motives for the things we do each day. Do we serve Christ because we love Him, or because of what He will do for us if we do? God promises to take care of every single thing in our lives when we love Him and are called according to His purposes (Romans 8:28). Our part is to go out into this world each day and follow where He takes us, say what He wants us to say, and do what He calls us to do, for His glory!
Priorities are key in our everyday lives if we are to be successful and productive. This is equally true in our discipleship. We want to concentrate on what is key, essential, and most important. Paul reminds us what is essential: Faith showing itself in loving actions. Faith that does not show itself in loving and helpful action is dead (James 2). Jesus wants our faith to express itself in vibrant and loving service.
Almighty God, please forgive me for the times I have lost sight of what is essential and focused on what is peripheral. Please forgive me for the times when my interests and concerns were more important to me than loving service to others. Please give me eyes to see the people you would have me serve today so others may know Jesus’ love. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Lord, I pray the Holy Spirit stir my soul everyday, that I express my love for you by my service to others. Faith is nothing unless it leads to action. We are born in your image and are called to serve by your example. Strengthen my heart and resolve to be the best servant I can be for your kingdom.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen!
