Devotion 5/6, Nothing Else
But godliness with contentment is great gain.
1 Timothy 6:6
This world teaches through every form of media that to be truly happy or content a person must make as much money as they can, have as much power as they can, and possess every item they desire. There are also those who believe that to be truly content one must be highly educated with many degrees under their belt and have careers that are prestigious and envied by all because of their intellect.
The Word of God teaches none of this! We learn from God in His Word that to be truly content and peaceful is to place our faith and trust in Jesus Christ (Philippians 4:7). Only through Him will we enjoy a peace that passes human understanding no matter what current circumstances we are going through in life. Money, power, and academic knowledge will not bring any lasting peace or joy to anyone.
It is not a sin to have money, a well paying job, or a college education. The sin comes when these things become our “god” in life taking the place in our hearts of our precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He demands first place in our lives and He deserves first place in our lives!
Paul reminded Timothy that ultimate gain, the gain of incalculable value, is really determined by a straightforward formula: genuine net worth = (godly character) X (contentment). What would happen if we realized that the truly wealthy were those with godly character who found contentment in Jesus regardless of their circumstances?
God created us to worship and serve Him and when we give Him preeminence in our life all of our earthy needs will be taken care of (Matthew 6:33), and all of our troubling circumstances will be resolved in His time, not ours (Romans 8:38).
Lord Jesus, thank You for loving me and for giving me a life that is rich and full in You! You are my everything and my desire is to serve You as long as there is breath in my body. Thank You for shedding Your blood for my sins on the cross at Calvary, I do not deserve Your love, but am so very happy that You loved me first. I give You all honor and praise this day, Amen!
Lord, nothing else will do!
Your will, your time! AMEN!
