Devotion 6/18, Wisdom and Knowledge
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10
The “fear” being spoken of here is a reverential fear of the Lord (respect), not the type of fear that God will harm us. This world is sadly lacking any reverential fear of God, in fact many openly mock Him, don’t they? The name of Jesus is maligned and trivialized like I have not seen in my lifetime. Mankind is “shaking his fist” at God because of rebellion in their hearts. They are living self-centered lives and taking their short-lived pleasure in all sorts of sinful ways.
Since the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, we know that the lack of fear for God is the beginning of foolishness! It will always amaze me how some seemingly intelligent people can be absolute fools because they do not believe in the Deity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). They choose to believe for example that we evolved from apes, that if there is a God He is just like us, and that there are in fact many gods and whichever one you choose to follow will end well as long as you are sincere. This is just a sample of some of the lies of satan that are accepted as “intelligent” thinking in our world today and being taught to our children in secular schools and universities.
But when we know Christ we are given understanding of God and His Word through the indwelling Holy Spirit of God that we received upon salvation. We know that every single thing in the Bible is absolute truth! There is no need to look to false gods for peace and revelation of things, because we know the only true God, and even more than that, He is our Father through Jesus Christ! As MacDonald puts it, “A true believer in God can see more on his knees than others can see on their tiptoes.”
Magnificent and awesome God, the great expanse of space and the incredible intricacies of the things in your creation that are so small humble me to silence. Please forgive my lapses into ignorant arrogance and lead me in the way of your wisdom. In Jesus, name. Amen.
