Devotion 7/23, Humble not Prideful
Be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 1 Peter 5:5
“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
Well, this is definitely counter cultural in our society today, isn’t it? The pride and arrogance that I see in people every day is quite sickening! No one is willing to say or even mean phrases such as, “I am sorry”, or “You are right, I was wrong.”
Instead, people will let their pride destroy relationships, and many times cost them more than they wanted to pay in consequences for their prideful actions.
God calls His children to be clothed in humility. This may sound weak and wimpy at first glance, but it is not. Rather it is showing strength of character, you see God wants us to be humble because when we are humble in spirit we are teachable by Him. When we look at Christ and the way He lived on this earth we see what humility looks like, He certainly was not weak, He was strong! He went about helping others and not focusing on Himself, putting their needs above His own, and always doing those things that pleased Father God. This is how God calls us to live (Philippians 2:4), to look out for the good of others and to serve them in any way that He calls us to serve them.
Father God, Thank You for sending Jesus to shed His blood for my sins. Help me to live as You have called me to live Father with a humble heart and a willing spirit towards others, and most importantly towards You. I give You all praise this day, Amen!
Desire a humble heart, we have so much to learn. Pride will only leave you lonely and alone. Lord, may I serve You and others with a humble and contrite heart. Amen.
