Devotion 7/26, Focus on God
Do not say, “Why were the old days better than these?” For it is not wise to ask such questions.
Ecclesiastes 7:10
It is ok to have fond memories of past experiences from time to time. But to dwell so intently on past times that a person is ineffective in the present is wrong. This notion that “the good old days” were so much better than now may be true in some respects, but not all. There were plenty of sinful practices going on throughout all ages, there were wars and famines and sins against humanity in almost every generation of mankind.
To live in the past is to live in a world of unreality. It is better to face the conditions we are in now and live triumphantly as God’s children. MacDonald says, “Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.”
Such a true statement! We who know Christ as Savior are to be reflections of Him (Ephesians 5:1) and therefore be lights in this dark and sinful world (Philippians 2:15). There may be plenty of bad things happening in our world at any given time, but this should not bring us down for we belong to the Creator of the universe. God is our Father and He never has His eye off of us for one second. When unpleasant things occur in our lives, He will give us all the strength, comfort, and peace to get through the troubles with our faith intact if we keep our focus on Him!
Father God, thank You for loving me and sending Jesus to die for my sins. It will always amaze me that You would love me and want to have a personal relationship with me. I am so very thankful for Your care and keeping of me in this evil world. Help me to be an accurate reflection of Your love to all I meet this day. In Jesus name I pray, Amen!
Lord keep my focus on You I pray, Amen.
