Devotion 9/1, The Joy of being Content
I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. Philippians 4:12
From Philip Ware:
“Contentment! Mmmm, I’d like to have a little of that! How about you? Paul was in prison when he wrote those words. I want the peace and joy from Jesus that assures contentment in any situation! However, I find it hard to be contented about almost anything. My performance is not up to par. My weight isn’t where it should be. My words were a little insensitive in the last conversation. No one seems to recognize I am even a part of the conversation. It’s easy for me, and also bet for you, to slip into recognizing what we don’t have financially and then pursue that instead of thanking God for our blessings. But before money, possessions, health, or any other thing can be truly enjoyed, we first must learn that contentment is not based on our circumstances but on our salvation and the presence of Jesus in our lives and futures.”
This world does not want us to be content in our “situation” in life. We are constantly being fed by every form of media that if we have this or that we will be content and happy. This is a lie of satan and we must recognize it as such! God has promised that He will supply all our needs. He will not give us all of our “wants” because some of those wants would not be good for us. He is a good parent and will always give us only what is best for us.
To be truly content is to be centered on and grounded in Jesus Christ. He is where all our joy and contentment come from. He, and He alone is the Source!
Father God, thank You for Your faithfulness to me. Even though I fail You many times, You have never left me. I am looking forward to all that You have planned for my life. Help me to always go to You for contentment and help me to recognize Your will in every situation, for Your glory Abba, Amen!
Oh love of God, how rich and pure. Your generous blessings of grace and mercies shower me with a love like no other. May your Holy Spirit fill my soul and spirit, that I might be truly content with all your many blessings and live for Your kingdom with a joy like no other. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
