Devotion 9/23, What we say
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
Ephesians 4:29
As God’s children we are called to a higher standard of living. We are to be set apart from this worlds ways. Our actions, attitudes, and speech is a direct reflection of Christ to all we meet. Paul is reminding us to present Christ in a worthy manner, not a poor one!
How do we speak to others. Do we build others up, or tear them down? Do we speak to them in a disrespectful way, or treat them with patience and love? Every word that comes out of our mouths is a testimony of what is in our heart. When the unsaved listen to our talk, do they hear edifying words, or is there no difference between our speech and attitude than that of the world?
The goal in Christian communication is not just clarity. Neither is the goal just to be understood. The goal is not even just to be truthful. The goal is to be helpfully appropriate, encouragingly uplifting, and based on benefitting the person who hears our words.
Tender Shepherd, I want to have a pure heart. I long for my words to be genuinely beneficial and intended to bless. Please help me as I seek to develop a kinder heart that fashions my words to bring others your blessings. I yearn to have a heart full of joyful encouragement to share your grace with those you lead into my path. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
I read a quote today, “when you think God isn’t there just remember, the Teacher is always quiet during a test”.
Lord, I pray the words from my mouth are a reflection of my heart and my faith in you. Today I pray for strength to say less, be a better listener and only speak what would be pleasing to you. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
