Devotion 2/23, Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
The arrogance of man will be brought low and the pride of men humbled; the Lord alone will be exalted in that day, and the idols will totally disappear. Isaiah 2:17-18
We live in a world that is so very arrogant, prideful, and full of idols! It is the very nature of mankind to be this way. However, for those who know Christ as Lord and Savior, there should be no arrogance or idol worship of any kind, for we are new beings in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). God is our Father and Jesus is our Redeemer! Any time we feel pride start to raise its ugly head within us we are to put a stop to it immediately. We have many verses in the Bible that tell us how God feels about pride. For example:
James 4:6
God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
Proverbs 11:2
When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.
Proverbs 21:24
“Scoffer” is the name of the arrogant, haughty man who acts with arrogant pride.
Knowing how God feels about pride should help us when we are tempted to feel any sort of arrogance!
Anything or anyone that we place above God in our lives is an idol. That may include career, money, power, position, a person, sports….the list would go on for hours if I listed all the things that could become an “idol” to us. This is why it is so crucial to stay in God’s Word and apply what we learn there each day! When our focus is on Christ and placing Him first, everything else will fall into its rightful place and priority in our life.
Father God, help me to keep my eyes fixed on You and doing Your will in my life each day! Outside of Christ I am nothing and have nothing. Only through Jesus can I take my place at Your table. I give You all honor and praise this day, Amen!
