Devotion 3/20, You are a Disciple of Christ, Chosen by Him!
He appointed twelve — designating them apostles — that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons.
Mark 3:14
These were actually very ordinary men in their respective communities that Jesus had chosen. But Jesus knew their hearts, Jesus knows everyone’s hearts! These men had a huge calling on their lives from God, they were going to be the representatives of Christ on this earth after Jesus was crucified.
God had a three-fold purpose behind the call of the twelve:
First there was to be a time of training, they would spend time with Jesus in private before preaching in public. We too must spend time with Him if we are ever going to be effective servants and accurate representatives of Him. We need to read His Word and pray to Him, this is communication with Jesus!
Secondly they were sent out to preach. Evangelism was always to be central to their service to Him. They were to proclaim the Word of God to the people, nothing was to ever thwart this plan for this was how people would come to Christ!
Finally, they were given supernatural power from God to cast out demons. When they did this, and many other miracles, it would attest to the people that God was working through these individuals. The Bible had not yet been completed, so miracles were the credentials of Gods messengers. Today we have access to the complete Word of God and people are responsible to believe it without the proof of miracles.
For we who know Christ today there is a call on our lives from God as well! We are to tell people about Jesus and the great mercy and love that He has for all who place their faith in Him for salvation.
As we go about our day, Lord help us to be looking for opportunities to share our precious Savior with those He places in our path!
Lord Jesus, thank You for coming to this world and dying for my sins. Help me to show Your love to all I interact with each day and to love as You love! I want nothing more than to be an accurate example of You to those in my life. I give You all praise, honor, and glory this day, Amen!
