Devotion 9/10, Come Holy Spirit
Through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.
Romans 8:2
When we trust in the blood of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins, we are at once “in Christ”. The penalty of all our sin is paid for by His atoning blood. We are now joint-heirs with Jesus, and stand before our Holy God as His child, cleared of our sin and no longer under condemnation!
Let that fact sink in for a moment. We know how sinful and undeserving of God’s forgiveness we are outside of Christ. But Jesus loves us so much He came and died a horrible death on the cross to save us for eternity! That is love, why would anyone reject that kind of love!!
There is no good work we can do to accomplish this position in Christ, for no work or act that we can do with these bodies has any power to save our souls, only our confession of oursins and faith in Jesus will give us eternal life in heaven, and bring us into the position of being “in Christ Jesus”.
Romans 5:9
Much more then, being justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.
Then Paul goes on to explain how the “law of the Spirit” sets us free from the “law of sin and death”. All through the Old Testament we can observe how the law brought death to mankind because he could not keep it. But when Jesus came He fulfilled the law by His final blood sacrifice and atoned for our sins once and for all. Now we have His indwelling Holy Spirit which enables us to obey God and live our lives in a pleasing way before Him through the power of His Spirit.
No longer do we “have to” obey the law for atonement of sin, instead His blood made final atonement for us and we are now set free to obey Him out of our love and gratitude towards Him. We have been changed from the inside out. We have a new nature in us now, a nature that desires to obey God and to please Him with our words and actions!
Thank you, Father, for your grace and mercy. I praise you, God Almighty, for your incredible sacrifice to bring my pardon. Glory and honor to you, Lord, for your gift of the Holy Spirit to lead and guide me in your will and transform me into a person of your character, like Jesus Christ. In his name, I thank you. Amen.
